History Day showed stories in quilts

The Todd County History Day on Oct. 3 was a success at the Browerville Community Center. Each historical society in the county had a quilt or representative present to talk about the quilts from their communities. Above, the quilt that started it all. The 46 blocks for this quilt were found at the Thread Shed in Staples and later retrieved from the DAC in Browerville.Rita Stracek from Browerville recognized some of the names on the blocks and thought that this quilt would be a great way to tell some of the history of Todd County in a new and interesting way. She contacted relatives of the people whose names were on the blocks and was able to write a book based on her findings about the people and places those people lived. Dee (Koval) Iten and Delores Luke stitched the blocks together to form an 8’ x 9’ quilt. It was the highlight of the show.

The show drew visitors from all over including (top left photo) Rita Esterl and her daughters Madeline and Christine who are all from the Twin Cities area. Clara Adamietz was Rita’s grandmother and her name is on the quilt. At left, Judy Petrie of Staples showed the date of 1899 displayed on one of the Hewitt collection quilts.
