Murray appointed to city council

Ron Murray was appointed to the Staples City Council at the Nov. 26 meeting and will fill the seat vacated by Rob Schmeig in September.

Murray said he has already looked into the 2014 budget and levy information, which will be on the agenda for the Dec. 10 meeting, when he will be sworn in. “I’m jumping right into the fire,” said Murray.

Murray has been a resident of Staples for 20 years, working for Lakewood Health System as a physical therapist and manager. “I enjoy living in Staples,” said Murray, “There are a lot of cool things here, strengths that I would like to be a part of promoting. I would like to see the city continue to improve.”

Murray said he has been encouraged in the past to run for a council seat, but he didn’t feel it was the right time until now. He has been involved with the Staples Parks and Recreation Board for many years and is currently the board chair.

In his application for the open city council seat, Murray said he learned a lot about city government from his father, who was a councilman for 20 years and mayor for 15 years in International Falls.

Murray was selected by a committee of council members Mike Isenberg and Roy Miles, along with Mayor Chris Etzler. Etzler said the committee had two “very good applicants” in Murray and Doug Case, adding that they weighed the pros and cons of each before making their recommendation to the council, which approved Murray unanimously.
