About a dozen friends and family members attended the ceremony at the courthouse.

Taves will be a county employee in the unusual position - neither appointed nor elected - of a “hired” auditor/treasurer from March 11, 2013, until the current term expires on Dec. 31, 2014. She will be eligible to run for election in the November 2014 general election, should she choose to do so.

Taves is completing the four-year term of former Auditor/Treasurer Char West, who resigned on Jan. 18, 2013, to take a job as Administrator/Clerk of the City of Menahga. West was elected to the four-year term in November 2010. West served the county for ten years.

Taves is no stranger to public service. She was a member of the Wadena- Deer Creek Board of Education from 1995 to 2008. She volunteered at the school in many ways when her children attended. She said, “My parents taught me it’s important to give back.”

Born and raised in Lubbock, Texas, Taves’ family included her parents and a brother.

Taves attended Texas Technical University, where she met her husband. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Texas Tech. After moving to Minnesota, she earned a master’s degree in Education from Bemidji State University.

When she moved to Wadena, she first worked for Rural Minnesota CEP in Detroit Lakes during the 1970s. From 1984-88 she taught accounting at Wadena Technical College. Taves is a certified public accountant, and worked for the firm Carlson Highland and Co. and its predecessor for 18 years before accepting the auditor/treasurer position.

Taves is married to attorney Harry Taves of Wadena. Harry grew up in Verndale and attended the University of Minnesota and Texas Tech. Judy and Harry Taves have two children – a boy and a girl. Their son Jonathan is a CPA working in Minneapolis, and their daughter Jennifer graduated from medical school in 2012 and is a resident at St. Cloud Hospital.

In her free time, Taves enjoys walking, biking, cross-country skiing, reading and attending movies and theatre productions. She and her husband like to attend Minnesota Gopher games whenever they can, and the Minnesota Twins baseball. She sings in the choir at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

After her first day as county auditor/treasurer, Taves said, “My job right now is to listen and learn. It’s a privilege and an honor to serve the people of Wadena County.”
