Relay for Life

One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. The funds raised at Relay for Life saves lives by funding cutting edge cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts and life-affirming patient services. It is because of your involvement that we are able to save lives, help those battling cancer and empower all to fight back against the disease. o The American Cancer Society began funding research in 1946 - have awarded approximately $3.6 billion to research. o Forty-six Nobel Prize Research Receipts of $130 million each year. Currently are funding 10 research grants in Minnesota. o In 2011, the American Cancer Society supported 51 grants to find answers that will help save lives from pediatric cancer.

In Todd County in 2011: o Seven people received a total of 62 rides to and from their cancer treatment. o Nine people accessed 230 nights of lodging at the Hope Lodge. o Nine people received patient services such as attending a Look Good Feel Better session, a wig, etc.

Relay for Life is our signature fund raising activity. Teams of people camp out at the Staples Elementary School to take turns walking or running around the track.

It brings people together to honor those who have been lost to cancer, celebrate those who have survived cancer and raise money to continue to support research for all types of cancer, education, advocacy and patient services.

I invite you to Relay for Life of Staples Motley on Friday, June 8, 2012. Many do not know that this is your community event, open to the public and we welcome everyone in this community to take part in some way—just come and walk with us.

We would love to have you form a team, if you haven’t already, sponsor the event, check out the activities and entertainment, enjoy the silent and live auctions and take part in the most impactive part of Relay, the Luminaria Ceremony at dusk.

We have planning committee meetings the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Lakewood Health System Hospital Cafeteria. Thanks to your participation we are creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
