Grant Longbella scored 20 points in one game and Seth Augher scored 22 the next night as the Staples Motley boys basketball team defeated two non-conference opponents on the road, Osakis 71-62 on Feb. 10 and Pine River-Backus 60-58 on Feb. 11.

The wins give the Cardinals six wins on the season with fifteen losses.

Coach Ray Gildow said Osakis is a better team than their four win record shows. “They have been in almost all of their games,” he said.

Longbella excelled on both ends of the floor, scoring 20 points and playing a “great game” on defense, said Gildow.

The Cardinals also did a good job of limiting the Osakis inside game, as they rely on their physical post player.

Staples Motley held the lead most of the game. “We tried to put the game out of reach a couple of times only to have them come roaring back with a scoring run,” said Gildow.

It was a similar story at Pine River, where the Cardinals had to contend with two top scorers. “Even though we knew they could score we played them man to man in hopes of shutting them down, but they both had the quickness to make them really tough to defend,” said Gildow.

Auger’s 22 points highlighted the best outside shooting game of the season for the Cardinals, as they connected on 12 three point shots, accounting for more than half their scoring.

Gildow said Pine River fans said they played one of their best games of the season. “We were lucky to walk out of the gym with a win,” he said. “It was a hard fought entertaining game that was determined in the last 5 seconds.”
