Dale “Swede”

Michael Mertens, 61, of Staples, died Aug. 2, 2010 at the Lakewood Health System Hospital in Staples.

Funeral services were held Aug. 6, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples. Burial was at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.

Arrangements were with the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.

Swede was born March 15, 1949 to Clarence and Opal (Stave) Mertens in Bertha. He grew up and attended school in Staples, graduating in 1968. After graduation he worked at Round Horse Construction in Minneapolis. In 1970, Swede worked as a truck driver for Midwest Coast Trucking. From 1973 to 1982, he worked for Burlington Northern Railroad in Staples, Bemidji and St. Cloud.

After a back injury he worked for American Security Corp. In 1984, he attended St. Cloud AVTI for heating and air conditioning and started his own air conditioning and heating business, Masters Refrigeration in Brainerd. He also worked for Robert’s Sand and Gravel, Lake E dward Township as road foreman. and was a business partner with Secur ity services in Pequot Lakes. Swede was forced to retire in 1992 due to his previous back injury. In 1977, he married Evelyn K. Miller of Bemidji. Together they had two daughters, Lisa Ann and Bobbi Jo. In 2004 they moved to a farm in Staples. He enjoyed ice fishing, playing cards, restoring

his older brother Roger “Fritz”.

Swede is survived by his wife, four daughters, Sheila (Bill) Hoyer; Sandy (Dean) Gregory both of Eatonville, Wash. (from his first marriage); Lisa Ann Mertens of Staples; Bobbi Jo Sterling of San Diego, Calif.; his father;

three brothers, Gary

(Dot); Clyde (Deb); Jerry “Jiggs” (Janet) all of Staples;

two sisters, Linda (Frank) Haisman and Anita (Darrell) Hove both of Staples; six grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother; one brother, Roger “Fritz” and one great-nephew.
